As of right now, Loriano has two cases left for the 1541-Ultimate. If you have a 1541-U and no case, here's your last chance. I have one of these cases and it's great. Since the 1541-U is no longer being made, it's pretty unlikely anyone will make more cases. _________________ -Brandon |

Man, I'm torn. I really want a case for mine but ... I just can't pull the trigger on a $75 (US) case. _________________ Flack

Although, I kind of justified it by the fact that it is pretty much the last thing for my Commodore "stuff" collection. If anything, I will downsize, not get more stuff -- and since the 1541 Ultimate really is the "ultimate" storage device ('cept for the Ultimate II, heh), I wanted to get it covered. The thought of having a bare circuit board open while a hundred people played with my C64 at OVGE was too much for me. _________________ -Brandon |

Christ, this thing was £75 to start??? I could probably build my own from scratch for less than that. Frankly, it's a fairly bulky and ugly case too.
I was hoping that there would be an official case released that looked like what they have going for the 1541U2's... but I guess that's not going to happen.

Building a proper case was no easy task -- the hardware doesn't fit in a normal-sized cartridge case. Getting them produced was expensive, and the original price spread the cost out over the initial purchases. It was pricey, and not for everybody.
I think the case looks very good, and it is extremely sturdy and I love the transparent top. This thread has pictures of mine: http://www.particles.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=977 The reflection makes it appear as if the case is not fully enclosed, but it is.
Also, the case allows you to have it completely enclosed in "external mode," which I am sure added a lot to the cost. _________________ -Brandon |

Does anyone actually use external mode with the 1541U? I really never saw the point.

I've never needed to, but if you have something else that you need to run on a cartridge, you kind of have to. I've see 1541-U forum posts about using it in standalone mode (regarding disk switching, etc), so some people do... _________________ -Brandon |

Got it and gave it a test run. It certainly works, but it's very quiet -- the line-level (I presume) volume from the output on the 1541-U doesn't quite drive the speaker to a clear volume, and lacks the bass to really reproduce that good ol' head smacking from the original 1541.
But, it adds to the "cool factor" of the device. _________________ -Brandon |
