3.5″ Unidisks are somewhat uncommon, and are in demand for Apple IIc users. Unlike most Apple drives, the 3.5″ drive is an intelligent drive – it contains it’s own CPU and other components to function, not unlike a Commodore 1581 disk drive.
They can hookup to the Smartport on a IIc and IIc+, but require a special controller for the Apple IIe.
In typical fashion, like most Sony 51W and 71W mechanisms at this age, the auto-eject, doesn’t. The gearing seems to be fine in this case, but I ordered new ones anyway. But the years of grease and grime have locked up the eject mechanism. I ended up quickly cleaning it up, cleaning the drive heads and greasing the rails, but really what needs to happen is a full teardown and rebuilt. But hey, it works, even if it IS a bit yellowed.
